The Star of India

Serving North Indian Comfort Foods for over 20 years in Central Arkansas

301 N Shackleford rd, Little Rock Arkansas

Since I was 14 I have been eating at the Star of India. Whether I was an omnivore or a vegan I know I can eat my fill at Star of India. Sammy (Pictured above) always greets his customers with open arms and a smile. You always feel like you’ve come home.

Sammy and his daughter Joyti Lal (Pictured above) are very well versed in the different dietary restrictions for vegans and vegetarians and even helps customers find what they’re looking for on their diverse menu.

Although not required in the Hindi religion vegetarianism is not uncommon among Hindus, Sikh’s, Jain’s and other religious denominations of India. An interesting fact is that India boasts a whopping 30% of it population to be vegetarian compared to 5% of The United States population. Sammy and his family have great respect for his customers personal beliefs when it comes to food.

As it has been a popular local vegan spot for years Rhonda Reid, local vegan and one of the admins for two Facebook groups, and Joyti Lal did a little brainstorming and decided to host their first ever all vegan buffet for our local vegan community. They did such a wonderful job bringing this event together it really felt like a vegan Christmas.

My personal favorite, Saag Paneer Tofu which I like to eat with…

Naan bread and tomato coconut soup!

The buffet was well received by the vegan community , in fact we packed the banquet hall and spilled out all over the restaurant! The vegetable Pakora was such a hit I missed my opportunity to photograph it in all it’s glory so I apologize but trust me it was crispy and delicious.

I hope you liked this post and please share with your friends. Thanks for reading.

  1. Beautifully written, great job! I remember well the first time we went to the Star of India and met Sammy. Palak Paneer is my favorite, I can’t wait to go back.
